Walking into a room and seeing a four-year-old picking out the complex, moody notes of Shostakovich’s Second Waltz entirely by ear is unsettling. In a good way. Most kids that age are still figuring out how not to put their shoes on the wrong feet. But for Laura Vitez, the piano was not a toy. It was a voice.
I have looked at plenty of “prodigy” stories over the years. Usually, they burn out, or they are just really good at mimicking the greats. But Laura is different. At sixteen, she has already moved past the “talented kid” label and stepped into something much more substantial. She is not just playing the music; she is writing the blueprints for it. From winning more than fifty international trophies to being knighted, her path has been a whirlwind.
The Early Spark
Music was always present. Her mother frequently took her to concerts, so the house was never quiet. By five, she was tackling Beethoven’s Fifth. By seven, the melodies in her head started becoming her own.
By ten, she had written a full piano piece that swept competitions in Toronto and Milan. That was the turning point. Since then, she has composed forty piano pieces and dozens of organ works. She also holds a Hungarian record for being the youngest to produce this much work.

Life As A 16-Year-Old Creator
School looks different when you are performing in Vienna. She has been a private student since fourth grade and is now a sophomore at a Michigan high school. This arrangement creates space for her to breathe and, more importantly, to compose.
A typical day is not about lockers and bells. It is about improvisation. She sits at the piano and plays whatever matches her mood. It can be a response to the news or simply a feeling. How Did Your Love For Composing Music Begin?
“I have been involved with music since I was a child,” Laura says. “My first music experiences were thanks to my mother, who frequently took me to concerts. Classical music was often playing in our home, and I started to explore the piano as soon as I was able to. Even at four or five, I was playing parts from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Shostakovich’s Second Waltz by ear, which were my favourites.”
“I started to compose when I was seven, beginning with small melodies that I continued to develop,” she adds. “At the age of ten, I finished the complete piano piece that became a hit. With this piece, I won international competitions in Toronto and Milan, which ignited my passion for composing music.”
“The following six years were incredibly productive, as I composed nearly forty piano pieces, numerous organ works, and won over fifty international competitions. I am particularly proud of winning the 2023 Salzburg Grand Prize Virtuoso competition, as well as the 2023 Bonn and 2024 Vienna Virtuoso competitions. I am recognised as a Hungarian record holder for being the youngest composer to have created so many works.”
What About Your Studies? What Is A Normal Day Like?
“I have been a private student since the fourth grade, which enables me to go at my own pace and devote most of my time to music. I am currently a sophomore at a Michigan high school. This setup gives me the ultimate creative freedom to focus on writing music. I am involved with music all day: composing, playing the organ, and fashion design.”
How Does The Actual Composing Work For You?
“Writing the music typically begins with improvisation for me,” she says. “I go to the piano and start playing what comes into my head. I am sometimes building on sounds, sometimes building on moods, or I am inspired by current events in the world.”
“My affection for the organ was solidified when, at age twelve, musician friends suggested that I try to perform some of my pieces on it. Since then, I have been composing for the organ exclusively, and I am working on my first organ album.”

Tell Us About The Albums You Have Put Out
“So far, I have released two highly successful piano albums,” she says. “The first, titled ‘Fly Free,’ was completed when I was fourteen years old and includes twelve of my own compositions. The second, released when I was fifteen, titled ‘Wonder,’ features another thirteen of my works. These albums not only showcase my talent as a composer but also reflect my emotional world.”
Is There One Work That Stays With You?
“My goal has always been to convey thoughts and emotions through my music,” she says. “‘Prayer for Peace’ is very special to me. I wrote this piece when I was twelve, during another outbreak of war in the world. I want to help spread peace, understanding, and kindness, and I believe that this message is particularly relevant today.”
“This piece is requested again and again at performances, so I am currently planning to record it as a music video in the hope that it will spread this message of peace to a broader audience.”
What Is The Main Inspiration?
“I draw a lot from classical music and film scores. Beethoven, Chopin, Shostakovich, and Vivaldi have a significant impact on me,” she says. “But I am inspired by more than just music: exploring the world, exhibitions, and travel enrich my work.”
“For me, the true motivation is portraying the feelings and moods of the world and people through music. My biggest dream is for my music to be heard in films, and perhaps to win the award for best original film score.”
And The BBC Role? What Was That Like?
“The casting for the BBC documentary ‘Mozart – Rise of a Genius’ was very exciting,” she says. “Playing Mozart’s student was a challenging yet highly honourable role. I also had to play the piano in the film, which made the entire shooting a fantastic experience. I had previously performed in Salzburg, so it was particularly moving to work in such a setting.”
Where Did The Fashion Design Come From?
“My inclination to do something related to fashion design was there from the start, but I received my first fashion design album when I was eight years old,” she says. “It was a hobby initially, but later my mother introduced my designs to specialists who were amazed by my talent. I am inspired by elegance and the timeless style of Coco Chanel and now perform in outfits designed by myself. I want to create my own fashion brand.”

What Does Being Knighted Actually Mean To You?
“Being knighted was a wonderful, uplifting event,” she says. “In April 2025, at just fifteen years old, the Roman Eagle Order recognised my artistic and musical achievements by inducting me as a member. It is important for me to help others with my talent, and being knighted provided that opportunity.”
How Do You Actually Switch Off?
“It is important for me to sometimes escape from daily life,” she shares. “The arts, exhibitions, a good book, or an exciting film always recharge me. My favourite authors are Agatha Christie, Jane Austen, and Emily Brontë, who open new worlds for me with their stories.”
What Is Next?
“This year, I plan to release my first organ album and continue exploring the world of music and fashion,” she says. “I want to complete several masterclasses and connect more deeply with my audiences through international performances. I always update my followers with the latest news on my social media.”
Global Ambitions
Looking ahead, Laura is preparing for numerous foreign and overseas performances throughout 2026–2027. Her schedule is becoming increasingly international, with both piano and organ concerts planned for major cultural hubs like Vienna, Prague, and New York.
Despite the gowns she designs herself and the honorary titles, she remains grounded. When she is not at the keys, she is reading Brontë or Christie. You can hear that storytelling in her music. It is not just notes; it is an arc, a mystery, a prayer.
