Scottish chef Lorna McNee, who was a winner of Great British Menu in 2019, Lorna McNee partner Dawn McIntyre married her in August 2021. Their story started where most restaurant romances do: in the chaos of a professional kitchen.
They met at Gleneagles Hotel while Lorna McNee partner, Dawn, was also working there. Somewhere between the mad rush of service and the twelve-hour shifts, they found a liking for each other; it all started over a decade ago.
Lorna McNee wedding almost didn’t happen. She left the marriage certificate at home. I mean, can you imagine? Everyone is here, people showed up, and you realise that the only thing you need for the ceremony to be truly legal you have left behind.
Lorna wrote an Instagram post about it later, laughing in the caption: “Mad panic right before the ceremony.” Still, everything worked out, and she called it “the best day ever”. That very much looks like her; she always takes a disaster and makes it a funny story, rather than allowing it to ruin things.
Baby Harry Changes Everything
In May 2023, Lorna McNee children became a reality when she and Dawn had a son, Harry Mac McNee. Cail Bruich announced it on Instagram with a lovely post about their head chef becoming a mum.
A baby while trying to run a Michelin-starred restaurant? That’s mad. However, Lorna McNee married life with Dawn makes it manageable, as Lorna McNee wife, Dawn McIntyre, lends her proper support. They do it together, trying to keep up with Harry’s demands and the demands of the kitchen.
Lorna McNee age is 38 now; she was born in 1987, which means she had Harry when she was 36. It is normal for women to have babies later in life when they are in such a rigorous career. The restaurant business is cutthroat, with long hours and almost no days off.

How Dawn Keeps Her Grounded
Dawn also works in hospitality, and it’s more meaningful than you think. She knows what Lorna’s job entails – the late hours, the pressure, and the strain on one’s body. In an interview with Hospitality Health, Lorna talked about how Dawn assists her in coping whenever everything gets too heavy.
“She’s incredibly good at helping me put things in perspective. I tend to stress over minor details and overthink most things. She calms me down.”
That’s what you need, isn’t it? You have someone around to notify you to take a breath after you begin to panic over whether the carrot mousse is exactly right.

The Career That Built Their Life
Lorna’s from Forres in the Highlands. She never planned on being a chef; she wanted to be a photographer, actually. But when that didn’t work out, the head chef at the Italian restaurant where she was washing dishes convinced her to give cooking a go.
At 20, she did something most people wouldn’t have the nerve to do. Tapped Andrew Fairlie on the shoulder whilst he was eating dinner at his restaurant and asked him for a job. Just walked up and asked.
He told her to think about it for a week and make sure she understood how hard it would be. She came back a week later. He gave her the job.
Twelve years at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie followed. Won Game Chef of the Year in 2016, Scottish Chef of the Year in 2017, and Champion of Champions on Great British Menu in 2019.
Then in 2020, Lorna took over as head chef at Cail Bruich in Glasgow. The restaurant earned its Michelin star in January 2021, which was the first in Glasgow in 18 years. She’s the only female chef in Scotland currently holding a Michelin star.
Balancing Motherhood And Michelin Stars
And nobody talks about how hard it is being a mum in professional kitchens. The hours don’t stop because you’ve got a baby at home. Service happens every night. Inspectors still show up. The pressure doesn’t ease off.
But Lorna Mcnee and Dawn are making it work. They’ve got each other, they’ve got Harry, and they’ve kept the Michelin star all the while. That’s no small achievement.
In January 2025, Lorna became a judge on Great British Menu, working alongside Tom Kerridge and Ed Gamble. So now she’s a head chef, a mum, a wife, and a telly personality.

What About Lorna McNee Illness?
Lorna McNee illness hasn’t been something she’s discussed publicly in terms of physical health. However, she has spoken openly about battling the stress and mental health problems that plague the industry.
The restaurant world is unforgiving. Long hours, constant pressure, heat, and exhaustion. Lorna uses exercise and communication with Dawn to cope. She goes for long walks, does CrossFit, and talks things through when the stress builds up.
After having a boss like Andrew Fairlie, who was kind and not at all intimidating, she says, “I want to give the same environment for my team. We invest our time working with the menu and tasting. Make sure they don’t feel undervalued, remain in high spirits, and don’t kill everyone else’s.”
Why Their Relationship Works
Look, Lorna McNee partner Dawn clearly gets it. She gets the demands, she gets the stress, she gets the tightrope and is never too far away to help Lorna get back to balance.
They met at work, so they know each other’s world. They worked their way to the altar through the chaos of planning a wedding in a pandemic, along with Lorna starting her new head chef job.
And now they are raising Harry, and Lorna has held on to that Michelin star and somehow managed to become a telly judge. That is life. That is love. No big gestures, just putting things back in order every day.
Final Thoughts
Lorna’s story is excellent. A girl from the Highlands dreams of becoming a photographer, becomes the most famous female chef in Scotland, winning a Michelin star, giving birth to a baby, participating in the Great British Menu as a judge, and constructing a life with someone who supports her the most.
She’s managed to do all of this while wearing her stress on her sleeve, supporting young chefs, and keeping her family life out of the spotlight, but not shrouded in mystery. She’s been able to do all of this with a partner who can keep her sane and a skill.
